Why Film?

May 3, 2019

When it comes to choosing the right maternity and newborn photographer for your growing family, there are so many different styles to choose from. I am often asked why I include film photography in my sessions, and so I thought I would share a bit more in detail about why I love film and choose to make it a signature part of my work!

Here are 3 Top Reasons I Love Black and White Film:

1. I believe that the timelessness of black and white film is unmatched.

Color is everything, black and white is more.” – Dominic Rouse

It’s no secret that I adore black and white photography- but even more so are photographs created with black and white film. When I photograph expecting mothers, and mothers holding their tiny newborns- I am not just creating a photograph for right now. I am creating a photograph that will be treasured in her family for generations.

A classic black and white film portrait truly has a time transcending quality to it. You can frame that photograph now, and the value to you will only grow with time. It doesn’t go out of style or be recalled as a trend. Black and white film never goes out of style, and therefore the mothers I photograph are women who personally value the classic and timeless over anything trendy. I love black and white film because I want my work to be classic and timeless- and I believe that no medium provides that look and style better than using black and white film.

2. Film is unique and worth investing in.

There have been so many technological advances that really make good quality photography available to more than just the professionals. You can take out your smartphone and slide your phone camera into portrait mode and capture beautiful images of your family. It’s important to me that I offer an experience for my clients that they can’t just get anywhere, or do themselves. There is a unique look to black and white film that simply cannot be replicated by digital photography. It is truly investing in art for your home.

3. Film creates a slower and more meaningful experience.

I currently photograph my film images with a Hasselblad medium format film camera. For each roll of film, I have just 12 shots. In a completely digital world, 12 pictures isn’t very many at all! This forces me to take my time, and make sure that every press of the shutter counts. With a digital camera, it’s easy to “click, click, click, click” without much thought, because you can easily discard of the ones that weren’t keepers. But with film, each picture you take matters- which has really taught me to be more intentional as a photographer. This provides my clients with beautiful and meaningful portraits that weren’t rushed or careless in how they were created.
