Last month I made the drive from my home in Maine to Middletown Connecticut. I not only had several portrait sessions scheduled in the Southern Connecticut area, but my best friend was due to have her first baby, and I was praying I wouldn’t miss it. She went into labor late into the evening I arrived, and I couldn’t be more grateful that it worked out for me to be there with her.
It was a whirlwind of a birth experience. She had long planned for peaceful home birth, prepping her mind and body for months and months, which no longer became her option when the baby decided to turn breech last minute. I watched my closest friend handle the Doctor’s news of an undesired c-section with such grace, knowing it was breaking it her heart in disappointment. It was such a reminder that ultimately God is in control, even we don’t understand it, and that motherhood itself requires the deepest kind of trust in that.
Her baby, Alexander David, was born strong and healthy, and we have so much to be thankful for.
I stayed with her for the first week after his birth, as c-sections are no picnic. Watching my best friend be a mother for the first time that week was been one of the most incredible, inspiring, rewarding experiences of my entire life.
We photographed their newborn session in her home, which are my absolute favorite photographs to create.
I really love the opportunity to photograph in my client’s home for a few different reasons. I believe it really adds to how special the portraits are. You will be able to look back at the very first family portrait years from now, and remember that it was the first house you brought your baby home to. Even if it’s not your forever house, the memories that those walls hold will be an additional treasure throughout your photographs. The portraits will also look more unique to each client then if done in the same studio every time.
It’s also so much easier on my client, especially for newborn sessions. Not having to factor in a trip in the car, or packing what they may or may not need away from home is such a benefit. I work with a lot of first time moms, and it’s often important to them that they will be able to feed their baby in the comfort of their own home. I work with local hair and makeup artists who travel as well, and most often meet my client right in their home prior to my arrival. It makes the session less stressful for my client, and more of a special experience.
Today I am so excited to share with you my personal favorites from her in home newborn session, each photographed on medium format film!
