At the close of 2013, I had a big goal to learn medium format film and eventually incorporate it into my professional portrait work. There is such an artful craft with film, a look that when done correctly, really cannot be imitated with a digital camera. So I purchased a Hasselbad and if I am being totally honest, it sat for months untouched on the shelf. I was so intimidated at the idea of “starting over” and re-learning the way I approached creating a photograph. Remembering why I purchased it in the first place, I eventually buckled down and started to practice. There have definitely been rolls that didn’t come out so well in the beginning, but now when I receive film scans there is a show of promise that this dream of shooting film on a regular basis could really happen.
I think my favorite part about using a film camera is that it forces me to slow down and really make sure everything is just as how it should be before clicking that shutter. It is easy to take multiple images with a digital camera, simply deleting the ones that didn’t work, but with film it’s a different story! This beach maternity session was photographed this past fall in beautiful Cape Elizabeth Maine. After I had taken what I wanted using my digital camera, I took a couple rolls of film to practice. I developed the color roll right away, but I completely forgot about the black and white, so my next film scans had a lovely little surprise! I loved this session- how classic and timeless she looked as she was expecting her first baby. As I continue to learn and develop a confidence in refining the art of film for my work, I will begin to use it for my commissioned portrait sessions which is really exciting!
