I stare in utter disbelief that the calendar says this year is closing. It seems like it was just summer yesterday! Christmas always seems to sneak up on me each year. It has been such a crazy, incredible, goal busting, can’t believe it was mine, year. In the past 12 months, I have gone full time with my photography business, moved from New Haven, Connecticut to Southern Maine, launched The Fount Collective, saw huge dreams come to pass, and stood my close friends who saw the same. Last December, I sat in the crowded living room at Justin & Mary’s with a blazing fireplace, clutching a mug of steaming cocoa at their “What’s Next Getaway” weekend. I sat amongst a room of creatives who were each whispering their biggest business dreams to life. I think back on the things that I said, the words that I spoke, and the dreams I could barely hear out loud- and I stand back and see the form they each took this past year. Learning medium format film, and falling more in love with art of photography every day. Refining my brand even further, to really only photograph that which I was most passionate for, and learning how to say no to the rest. Believing in my business to go full time, and trusting God to provide every step of the way- which he did….ten-fold.
I am walking into 2015 with a photography business I love, and a work I believe in. I have come to place of truly finding my own way. No longer feeling the need to keep up those I felt I needed to, but instead finding a deeper satisfaction in paving my own path. My brand, and even my website has found a momentum of simplicity that I am cultivating more each day. Less is really more. The work, and the ART, is most important to me. The tangible, was truly the best business decision I ever made, and proved to me that following your heart is the best advice you can take. I am going into 2015 with one goal above all other for my business, and that is to be a better photographer. Learn more of my craft. Refine my skill at creating incredible portraits. Nailing more images in camera, and less in photoshop. Shoot more film. Slow down and ask myself “Why” before every click of the shutter. Yes, there are smaller goals, and so many big things dreamed for the new year, but above all else, it is to learn more of the art of photography.
Exposure. Composition. Light. Emotion…the simplicity and the depth of what great photography is all about. Here is a look at the past year, and some of my favorite portraits I have photographed this year. I love being able to see the difference in my work on images pulled from many months ago, and those that were created most recently. I am so grateful for all the incredible families that invited me in to their homes and their most cherished relationships, trusting me to create what will be a tangible legacy for generations to come. I never stop feeling thankful for the gift of living this life I love.
